when the parties to a conflict are unwilling to settle their differences , and there is a danger of the conflict spreading , a notable third party may intervene and impose a truce by declaring that any further act of hostility will be considered a violation of his own honour-and an attack upon himself . the notable is thus said to have *thrown his face* (rama al-wijh) between the contending parties - face meaning honour .
a usual condition of such a truce requires that one or both of the parties relocate , so that they will not normally meet , especially when murder has been committed and retaliation is likely .
